Electricity & Gas
The usage of utilities is being monitored and the green team promote the importance of sustainability to all staff via the intranet and other internal communications channels. Initiatives driven by the team that have reduced the utility usage include:
- Switching off PCs & monitors during lunch breaks.
- Switching off printers & photocopiers at the end of each day.
- Only lighting & heating areas of the venue when the rooms are in use.
We have replaced the majority of the light bulbs in the building with energy saving ones. The venue has a BMS (building management system). This is a stand alone microprocessor unit that monitors and controls the heating, cooling and fresh air supply to the offices and function rooms. Using a combination of sensors and actuators, the temperature and air quality is maintained between set parameters throughout the building.
In addition to the venue committing to using fewer resources, a thermal survey of the building has been undertaken to identify locations where heat is lost through defective or inadequate insulation. Following this report the following were undertaken:
- Re-lagging several pipes.
- Re-fixing of ill fitted windows.
- Installation of a new more efficient water calorifier to provide hot water.
- Additionally, all staff and delegates are reminded to keep windows and doors closed.
