History, art & architecture

The building, designed by James Miller, is the headquarters of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the world’s first professional engineering body with over 97,000 members globally.

The foundation stone for the building was laid by the then ICE President, Sir James Charles Inglis on the 25th of October in 1910 and the building opened in 1913. One Great George Street has been described as a ‘monumental neo-classical design’, a ‘modern rendering of the late Renaissance’. The venue also houses the Institution’s art collection, which includes the world’s largest collection of portraits of engineers, featuring work by Wyllie, Lucas and Millais, among others.

This stunning Westminster conference, meetings, events and wedding venue was first Grade II listed on 26th of July in 1984 and it is maintained year on year to continue integrating contemporary updates while preserving its grandeur.

Every corner of One Great George Street has a story to tell. Did you know that HRH The Duke of Edinburgh sat his Royal Navy Examinations in the Great Hall and in 1945 the signing of the charter establishing UNESCO also took place in that room? Also, the building was used for night-time fire watching on the roof during the Second World War. It was also hit a couple of times during the Blitz; fortunately, both bombs burnt out before any damage could be done.
