Buchanan Room

Buchanan Room

About

Situated on the ground floor, the Buchanan Room has a large table that can comfortably seat up to 14 people for a meeting or 12 for a seated buffet function or private dining event.

Accessible via our main reception area or, alternatively there is access via the President's staircase.

The room was originally the office of the Deputy Secretary to the Institution of Civil Engineers. It is traditional in style with wood panelling, an ornate fireplace with vivid glossed tile work and high ceilings with large windows.

There is an interesting old clock in the room that tells the weather rather than the time. Paintings on the walls depict famous bridges that our founders and members designed and built. These include: the Royal Border Bridge built in 1847 and designed by Robert Stephenson (son of George Stephenson) and the Hungerford Bridge, the first version of which was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and opened in 1845.
